.
Common name: Beaked Stewartia
Family: Theaceae
Distribution: eastern China
Habitat: Forest to 1500 m
IUCN Red list: Data deficient
Hardiness: Zone 6b -5 to 0 F
Life form: Deciduous tree

Comments: When compared to the Japanese or orangebark stewartias this species is, to some, not quite the Cinderella the other two might be considered. Nevertheless, the upright or beaked stewartia has its own appealing qualities! The flower buds are surrounded deep maroon bracts followed by lovely white flowers, sometimes tinged with maroon, in late spring. The leaves turn dark red-purple in autumn.
