Acer saccharum 'Newton Sentry'
.
Family: Sapindaceae
Distribution: Garden Origin
Hardiness: Zone 4a -30 to -25 F
Life form: Deciduous tree
Comments: An old cultivar, its original discovery is from 1885 at the entrance to Newton cemetery in Massachusetts. It is often confused with another upright sugar maple cultivar 'Monumentale' which has a more distinct central leader.
This tree is a great example of Newton Sentry, the upright form giving an impressive display of fall color, on certain fall days it has been described as an oversized Rocket pop due to the color gradient from green at the base to orange at the top.
