Named after John Jeffrey (1826 – 1854), a Scottish botanist and plant-hunter active in the United States. He collected seeds and continued the efforts of the more famous botanist David Douglas (1799 –1834). Interestingly after four years exploring Washington, Oregon, and California, sending his specimens back to Scotland, he disappeared while traveling from San Diego across the Colorado Desert and was never seen again. Jeffery Pine is similar in appearance to the closely related Ponderosa Pine (P. ponderosa) though not as wide spread. Native to Southern Oregon, California and Nevada it is generally a mountain species, well adapted to a hot dry climate. The cones are 8 to 10 inches (20 to 25 cm.) long, about twice the size of Ponderosa cones. The bark smells of pineapple on a hot day.
