Comments: Port Orford Cedar looks similar to Western Red Cedar (Thuja plicata), but the scaled leaves are smaller with a white X pattern below. The round cones are ⅜ inch (1 cm.) in diameter. This species is threatened through much of its natural range with pathogenic root rot (Phytophthora lateralis). Note that Port Orford Cedar is not a true cedar. That is, its genus is not Cedrus, the genus of the true cedars. Its closest relative is Hinoki cedar, Chamaecyparis obtusa which occurs in Japan and is an example of a species dysjunct whaere two very similar plants occur in very geographically removed locations.
