Comments: Pinus contorta has a huge range across the western United States and Northern Mexico. Three distinct sub species are recognised based mainly on geographic region with some morphological differences. var. latifolia is the Lodgepole pine whose range runs from the Yukon to Colorado at elevations to 3500meters. trees to 150 ft though often smaller.
Needles are long and 1-2 mm wide. Cones are small persistent with a blunt prickle - which is the term for the tip of each cone scale. Feel a cone to see what you observe.
