Comments: Canyon live oak is an evergreen tree with significant-sized spreading, horizontal branches, and a broad, rounded crown. Grows to 20’–100’, but is often found in a shrubby, shorter, growth form. The trunk diameter can typically range from 30 to 100 centimeters. Elliptical to oblong leaves, short-pointed at tip, rounded or blunt at base, 1”-3.5” long, .5”-1.5” wide. Leaf margins slightly turned under, with spiny teeth mainly on young twigs, glossy dark green above, dull golden below fading to gray and glabrous the second year. Bark light gray and smooth, sometimes scaly. Acorns solitary or in pairs, 2-5cm in length, ovoid with a shallow think cup densely covered with yellow hairs; stalk barely evident.
Best grown in full sun, in well-drained to rocky soil, with moderate acidity (pH 4.5-7.0). Tolerant of a variety of soil types, except for wet situations.
