Comments: One of four endemic true fir species in Japan, this grows in mid to high elevation temperate forest 700 to 2000 meters above sea level. Typically these trees are 60 to 100 ft and can be stout with trunk diameter of 5 ft. They were used as structural lumber in Japan though logging is uncommon now.
Needles are mostly above the branch about 1 inch long and stiff the longer needls held horizontally. The needle tip is notched or blunt, green above with two visible bands below. Needles taper towards the tip of the branch and the branch tip bud is resinous.
