Prunus serrula - birchbark cherry, paperbark cherry, redbark cherry, 细齿樱桃 xi chi ying tao
.
Common name: birchbark cherry, paperbark cherry, redbark cherry, 细齿樱桃 xi chi ying tao
Family: Rosaceae
Synonym: Cerasus serrula
Distribution: Western China
Habitat: Mountain slopes, forest in ravines, forest margins, grassy mountain slopes; 1200--4000 m.
IUCN Red list: Least concern
Hardiness: Zone 5b -15 to -10 F
Life form: Deciduous tree
Usage: Ornamental
Comments: Two characters make this cherry distinct; one is the narrowness and fine toothing of the leaves which are rather willow-like; the other is the beautiful bright brown peeling bark, at least of young trees. This feature alone makes the tree worth cultivating, for it is not more striking in any tree of similar character. So far as I have seen its flower beauty is not great. A.M. 1944 (for its bark). Used as ornamental garden plants. Tree bark is the main ornamental feature. Site this tree in a location where the bark can be seen and appreciated. Bark can be particularly noticeable in winter.
