Comments: Sugar maple is an iconic, large deciduous tree, which is the source of maple syrup. It has ascending branches, and its bark becomes furrowed with long irrigular plates or ridges with age. Leaves are simple and opposite, lobed, with narrow and deep sinuses. Lobe tips are acuminate, the leaf base is cordate, and margins are slightly coarsely toothed. Fall color can vary from yellow to orange to red. Flowers are small and greenish yellow on long, thin, pendulous stalked, and fruits are paired, winged samaras. Sugar maple prefers sun to part-shade in well-drained, moist, fertile soil. Sugar maple is the national tree of Canada.
