.
Common name: Fenzel's pine, Hainan white pine, 华南五针松 hua nan wu zhen song
Family: Pinaceae
Distribution: Southern China, Vietnam
Habitat: Hills, slopes, mountain ridges, summits; 500-1600 m. N Guangdong, SW Guangxi, S Guizhou, Hainan, S Hunan [Vietnam]
IUCN Red list: Near threatened
Hardiness: Zone 5a -20 to -15 F
Life form: Evergreen conifer
Comments: Hills, slopes, mountain ridges. A vulnerable species in China. Kwangtung pine is somewhat slow growing, but over time will mature into an attractive, medium-sized pine tree that makes a good specimen for lawns or around houses. Timber used by local people as good construction timber. Besides its oleo resin can be used as an adhesive. This is a very endangered tree species of Viet Nam. Due to its confined habitats, the number of individuals is not many, and the needs in construction timber and fuelwood of the tribesmen groups may cause the species to disappear; its number being strongly reduced. Rated as a vulnerable species. We need integral protection of the species in-situ (at the existing pine groves of Pa Co). Research should also be made to create plantations of the species at its range of habitats, as supplementary measures for preservation" (FIPI 1996). Note: Confusion in identification between Pinus fenzeliana and P. kwangtungensis.
Timber is used for funitures and construction. Resin used as an adhesive. Cultivated as bonsai. A vulnerable species in China. It has often been confused, and even united, with Pinus fenzeliana (to which the records from Hainan might belong); however, the two species are not considered here to be conspecific.
